Dremel tools are small rotary tools. They fit comfortably in the hand and feature a small rotating blade or cutting tool called a Dremel bit at the end. Just like its bigger siblings, the die grinder and angle grinder, the Dremel tool is an extremely versatile tool. The amount of work it can do is astounding. However, to take advantage of this versatility, you need to find the right accessory or bit for your Dremel tool.

What is a Dremel bit? A Dremel attachment is a tool attachment that can change the function of your Dremel rotary tool, allowing it to perform a variety of different tasks. Simply attach it to the front of your Dremel rotary tool, and you’re ready to go.
In this guide, I intend to show you how to choose the right Dremel accessory. There are many, and I could never cover them all. However, I intend to introduce you to some of the most useful ones so you can see how handy a Dremel tool can be.
The Different Types of Dremel Attachments Here is a list of the most commonly used Dremel attachments and their uses.1. Sanding Attachments
One of the main uses of your Dremel tool is sanding various surfaces. When you hear the term “sanding,” you immediately think of sanding wood, and for good reason. With the right bit, you can certainly use your Dremel tool to sand and smooth wood. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that you’re limited to this, because that’s not the case. With the right sanding disc or belt, you can sand materials such as fiberglass, clay, Plexiglas, and much more. Sanding bits for Dremel tools come in two different types.
Drums: The first type is known as “drums.” They look like small, round cylinders. You attach the cylinder to the end of your Dremel tool, then slide what’s called a “band” onto the cylinder. The band is coated with abrasive particles, and the drum holds it in place. The belt does the work.
So, in the case of sanding, the belt is covered with the abrasive material you use to sand wood, Plexiglas, aluminum, or whatever material you’re sanding.
Discs: The second type is known as “discs.” If you’ve ever used a sander, this type of disc will be a little more familiar to you. These are small discs that you attach to the end of your Dremel tool and use for precision sanding. Generally, if you need to sand a larger area, you should use a drum bit. If you want more precision, opt for a sanding disc for your Dremel tool.Note: You should know that a rotary tool like a Dremel cannot replace specialized electric sanders like belt sanders or orbital sanders. 2. Cutting tips
While most people opt for an angle grinder or circular saw when they need to cut objects like wood or tile, a Dremel tool works perfectly well as a cutting tool if you know which bits to use. There are many different types of cutting bits you can use. Almost all Dremel tool bits designed for cutting are shaped like discs.
However, this doesn’t mean that all cutting discs are created equal. Some cutting discs are made with minimal spacing between the teeth (a higher number of teeth) for very precise cutting. Others have very large spacing between the teeth, which is useful for bulk cutting when you’re not too concerned about the appearance of the final product. As with sanding bits, you might be tempted to think that the cutting bits for your Dremel tool can only be used for wood, but again, you’d be wrong. Regular cutting bits can be used for wood, but if you need to cut things like thin metal, aluminum, or tile, you can use a fiberglass cutting bit instead.
3. Engraving and Etching Bits
Dremel tools are ideal for engraving, etching, carving, or general decorative work. This is because Dremel tools are extremely small and allow for very precise engraving and decoration.
Using engraving bits is simple. Simply choose the specific bit you want and attach it to the end of your Dremel tool. They come in different models, sizes, and styles, so the challenge is finding the one that works best for you. Tip: Use diamond-tipped Dremel bits for engraving glass objects. 4. Countersinking and Drilling Bits
If you needed further proof that the Dremel tool is one of the most versatile power tools available, know that in addition to cutting, engraving, sanding, polishing, and everything else it can do, it can also act as a drill. Indeed, with the right router bit or cutter, your Dremel tool can become an excellent option for milling wood or drilling soft materials like wood, plastic, or thin metal.
As with all the other bits I’ve discussed so far, there are a wide variety of different milling and drilling bits to choose from. So, no matter what type of drilling and routing work you need to do, you should be able to find the perfect bit to use.
Which Dremel Bit for Each Job? In the next part of this article, I want to quickly discuss which Dremel bit is best for each job. Obviously, I can’t cover every job, but I can review some of the most common and popular ones. Which Dremel Bit for Wood Cutting? If you want to use your Dremel tool for cutting wood, the best option for you is to invest in a carbide cutting wheel. These bits are excellent for quickly cutting through the hardest pieces of wood.
For wood carving, you can get hardened high-speed steel bits or carbide bits. Carbide bits are more durable and will last a long time. Likewise, carbide is so powerful that it allows you to make rough cuts and more precise cuts.
Dremel Bits for Metalworking
If you need to cut something hard like metal, or if you simply need to work with it, then you’ll need to invest in a Dremel metal cutting wheel. To be more specific, look for an abrasive cutting wheel made of a material like fiberglass or, even better, aluminum oxide. These tools are ideal for metalworking.
For metal engraving work, I recommend carbide bits. They are well suited for engraving soft metals like aluminum, brass, etc. For hard metals like steel, you can use carbide burrs for deburring and chamfering. However, keep in mind that while carbide bits are very hard, they are also brittle.
Which Dremel bit is best for cutting glass?
If you need to cut glass, you need a Dremel tool bit made of diamond. This is true for virtually all power tools. If you’re working with glass, you need diamond-tipped tools; this is a must. Glass is very hard and brittle.
Fortunately, there are many diamond bits for Dremel tools, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding them.
Best Dremel Bit for Stone Carving Once again, diamond bits are the best choice. However, before purchasing a diamond-tipped burr, you should know that the choice of tools also depends on the type of stone or rock you’ll be working with. Soft stones like sandstone and soapstone are easy to carve. You can also carve soft marble, but it takes time. If you want to remove a lot of material, consider using a chisel and hammer to get a rough shape and finish it with the Dremel.
Hard stones like granite, jade, etc. are very difficult to work with. I recommend starting with soft stones and working your way up. Diamond bits are available in various grits, from 40 (coarse) to 600 (fine). The standard 150-grit diamond bit can also be used as a versatile Dremel bit for stone, glass, and other hard materials.
